What is a Cathedral Veil?
A cathedral veil is a long wedding veil designed to extend beyond the hem and train of the gown. At Madame Tulle, our standard cathedral length measures approximately 120 inches (305 cm), creating a graceful sweep of tulle behind you as you walk.
Despite its dramatic length, a cathedral length veil doesn't necessarily need to feel elaborate or formal. In soft, unembellished tulle it can appear beautifully light and understated, while lace, pearls, floral details or personalised embroidery can transform the same length into a more distinctive statement.
The beauty of cathedral length is in its proportions. It gives the veil room to fall naturally around the gown and creates a beautiful frame for the dress, particularly when viewed from behind.
Why Choose a Cathedral Length Veil?
Cathedral length is a beautiful choice for brides who want their veil to have presence while still allowing the gown to remain at the heart of the bridal look.
For an intricately detailed gown, a simple cathedral veil can add softness and movement without competing with the dress. Against a clean or minimal silhouette, lace, pearls, floral embellishment or embroidery can introduce a romantic focal point.
The additional length also allows decorative details to be seen beautifully across the train. A lace border can frame the silhouette of the gown, scattered embellishments can flow gradually through the tulle, and personalised embroidery has the space to become a meaningful detail within the design.
Whether simple or detailed, a cathedral wedding veil creates a beautiful sense of movement from the ceremony through to your photographs.
Our Cathedral Styles
Plain Cathedral Veil
There is something particularly beautiful about the simplicity of a long, unembellished veil.
A plain cathedral veil creates a soft, uninterrupted layer of tulle around the gown, making it a beautiful choice when you want length and movement without introducing additional detail. It can complement an intricately embellished dress while also adding a romantic finishing touch to a clean, modern silhouette.
Madame Tulle plain veils are available in different tulle types and constructions, allowing you to choose anything from a barely-there effect to a softer, more flowing or fuller silhouette.
Lace Cathedral Veil
A lace cathedral veil is a timeless choice for brides who love romantic detail. At cathedral length, lace has the space to frame the gown beautifully, drawing the eye along the train without taking away from the dress itself.
Our lace wedding veils range from delicate lace-edged designs to more detailed floral and appliqué styles. When choosing your veil, consider the detailing of your gown as well as its silhouette. The lace doesn't necessarily need to match your dress exactly; a complementary design can create a beautifully considered bridal look.
Pearl Cathedral Veil
Softly scattered pearls bring texture and subtle dimension to a pearl cathedral veil, creating beautiful detail across the tulle while allowing the silhouette of the gown to remain visible beneath.
Pearl veils can be particularly lovely with simple gowns, where the embellishment becomes part of the overall bridal look, but they can also complement dresses with pearl or beaded detailing.
For something more defined, pearl-edged cathedral veils create a delicate outline around the veil and draw attention to its sweeping length.
Cathedral Veil with Blusher
For brides who love the romance of a blusher, cathedral length can also be worn as a two-tier veil.
A cathedral veil with blusher combines a shorter front layer with a cathedral-length back, creating a beautiful layered silhouette. The blusher may be worn over the face for the walk down the aisle before being lifted during the ceremony, or simply worn swept back as an additional layer.
Madame Tulle offers both softly gathered two-tier styles and drop veil styles with a blusher, allowing you to choose the amount of fullness and structure that best complements your gown.
Two Tier Cathedral Veil
A two-tier cathedral veil combines a shorter upper layer with a long cathedral-length train. The additional layer brings softness and dimension around the shoulders and upper body while preserving the beautiful length of the veil behind the gown.
For brides who prefer a more traditional, softly gathered silhouette, a classic two-tier veil creates gentle fullness around the comb. A drop veil offers a different effect, falling without gathers for a lighter, more understated silhouette.
Both can be beautiful at cathedral length; the right choice depends on your gown and how much volume you would like around the upper part of the veil.

How to Wear a Cathedral Veil
Although cathedral veils have an impressive length, they are surprisingly easy to wear with a little preparation.
Madame Tulle veils are attached to a slim metal wire comb, which can be positioned according to your hairstyle and the effect you would like to create. Wearing the comb slightly higher can allow the veil to fall more visibly around the shoulders, while placing it lower beneath an updo can create a softer, more streamlined effect.
Your hairstylist can secure the comb to suit your chosen hairstyle, so we recommend bringing your veil, or discussing its length and placement, at your bridal hair trial.
Before walking down the aisle, allow the cathedral train to fall naturally behind the gown and gently arrange the edges so the veil sits beautifully around the dress. A bridesmaid or someone from your wedding party can help arrange the veil before the processional and again for photographs.
Many brides choose to remove a cathedral veil after the ceremony and portraits, allowing them to move more freely during the reception while preserving the veil after its moment down the aisle.
Pairing Your Cathedral Veil with Your Gown
There are no strict rules when choosing a cathedral veil. The most beautiful pairing is one that feels balanced with your gown while still reflecting your own bridal style.
- With an intricately detailed gown: Choose a plain or lightly detailed veil if you would like to add softness and movement without covering the details you love about your dress. A barely-there veil can work particularly beautifully over lace, beading or an elaborate train.
- With a simple or minimal gown: A lace, pearl, floral or personalised cathedral veil can introduce beautiful detail and become a feature of the bridal look. A simple gown also gives you more freedom to choose a veil with a distinctive border or embellishment.
- With a lace gown: Your veil doesn't need to feature exactly the same lace as your dress. Consider the scale, pattern and overall feeling of the lace instead. A complementary design can often create a softer and more natural result than trying to achieve an exact match.
- With a fuller skirt or long train: Consider the width of your veil as well as its length. A wider cathedral veil can frame a fuller gown more completely, allowing the edges and embellishment to fall around rather than inside the silhouette of the skirt. Extra-wide options are available for selected designs.
- With a fitted or streamlined gown: Both narrow and wider cathedral veils can work beautifully. A more streamlined veil follows the clean lines of the dress, while additional width creates a softer, more romantic frame around the silhouette.
